Here we can see the strong timbers shoring up the sides of the deep trench during construction of the new lock entrance to the South Quay of the Alexandra Docks Newport. This was to be the second largest lock in the world at that time. It was during the construction of the South Lock that one of the most tragic events in the history of Newport occurred resulting in over 30 deaths.
